On Roanoke Island is “The Lost Colony”. This is the site of the first attempt by the British to establish a colony in 1587. “The Lost Colony” outdoor drama has been telling this story for over 70 years and plays during the summer at the site. You will also find The Elizabethan Gardens there.
One of the three North Carolina Aquariums is located near the Airport.

In Manteo there is The Roanoke Is. Festival Park. The park    hosts drama, music and film events. The Elizabeth II replica 16th century sailing ship is berthed at The Park as well as a museum and history center. Manteo is home to shops and restaurants as well as an active waterfront with many boat tours available.

In Nags Head is Jockeys Ridge State Park where the tallest sand dune on the East Coast is located. You can learn to hang glide there. Nearby is The Nags Head Woods Coastal reserve operated by The Nature Conservancy. The Wright Brothers Nat. Memorial is located at the 8 mile post in the town of Kill Devil Hills. Here is a museum, and The Memorial. This is the site of the first powered flight on Dec. 17 1903 and the three years of experimentation with gliders by the Wright Brothers leading up to that historic date.   In Corolla is The Currituck Beach Lighthouse and the restored 1925 The Whale Head Club. Nearby is an NC State Estaturine Preserve where you might see some wild horses.

The Outer Banks is home to the Cape Hatteras National Seashore with 60 miles of undeveloped shoreline. Within The Seashore is the Pea Is. Nat. Wildlife Refuge where you can view abundant bird life year round. In the Seashore there are the Bodie and Cape Hatteras Lighthouses and the restored Chicamacomico Lifesaving Sataion.

On the Mainland is The Alligator River Wildlife Refuge where tours are available to possibly see bears, alligators, otters and red wolves as well as other wildlife. The Kitty Hawk Woods Coastal Reserve is adjacent to The Inn. Recreational opportunities abound. The fishing is legendary. You may also golf, ride horses, surf, kite board, windsurf, sail, motor boating, kayaking, hang glide, bike, hike, run, hunt and swim in the ocean. You may also compete in most of the above activities. To sum up there is no shortage of activities to fill your visit many of which are unique to the area. PS, you could just sit on the porch and enjoy the view.
